SD Mines Cultural Expo

International students from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and a variety of community groups will celebrate their cultural diversity with food, entertainment, and displays during the annual SD Mines Cultural Expo on Thursday and Saturday, March 28 and 30.

The event is open to visiting K-12 schools from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in the Surbeck Center Ballroom on campus. Organizers expect school children from throughout the Black Hills region to attend Thursday’s expo, which will include cultural activities, storytelling, and traditional crafts.

The general public is invited to the Cultural Expo from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 30, in the same location. Events include international food sampling prepared by students and community groups and a variety of cultural entertainment. There is an $8 charge for the sampling of ethnic foods, which will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday only. Entertainment begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, and will feature traditional music, dancing and fashion shows from a wide range of cultures.

The Cultural Expo has a long history at SD Mines. International students have been sharing their cultures with the community through the annual event for more than 50 years. The 2019 Cultural Expo sponsors include Ivanhoe International Center, SD Mines Student Association, International Students Inc., Black Hills Energy and Coca-Cola. SD Mines Rocker Shop and area restaurants are donating gift cards and other items to be given away as prizes.
