Get Crafty: DIY Garden Markers

It’s tons of fun planting a garden together as a family, and there are a lot of perks to doing so. But how do you keep the fruits and veggies identified? Make your own garden markers with these simple crafts.

Painted Rocks

Materials Needed:

  • Large rocks (similar to the shape of the fruit/vegetable being painted on it)
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paint tray (we used the lid to a coffee can; paper plates work great)
  • Paint brushes (medium and small)
  • Water jar (for cleaning the brushes)
  • Permanent marker
  • Sealant spray (recommended)

Assess the fruits and veggies you need markers for and choose which rocks are best. Then, you will want to wash the rocks that you’ve found before you paint them. A quick run in some water will do just fine. Make sure they are completely dry before starting.

According to the shape of the rocks, begin painting the food’s shape with acrylic paints onto the rock. Let each layer of paint color dry before adding on top of it.

Once the paint of your fruit/veggie is dry, use your permanent marker to outline the food. Last but not least, label the rock with the name of your plant.

An optional step we suggest is using a sealant spray overtop of the rocks once your project is complete. This will help the artwork stay longer through rain, hail, etc.

Colorful Stir Sticks

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden stir sticks
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paint tray (we used the lid to a coffee can; paper plates work great)
  • Paint brushes (medium and small)
  • Water jar (for cleaning the brushes)
  • Permanent marker
  • Sealant spray (recommended)

Starting from the top, paint each stir stick a different color 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down the stick. (The grooved part of the stir stick will be placed into the ground.) Add a splash of color and paint them a variety of shades on all four sides. After your paint has dried completely, write the name of the plant up one large side of the stir stick. (Try it out: You could even draw the vegetables at the very top!)

An optional step we suggest is spraying a sealant over the top of your creation to withstand the weather.
